Spoiled rotten by living as a Coeliac in one of the most gluten free aware countries in the world, I became accustomed to gluten free options on nearly every menu. In the safety of allergy aware Sydney, I mastered the art of ordering gluten free. On the odd occasion of an accidental piece of toast across otherwise gluten free scrambled eggs, I was able to politely send back the dish to be remade and returned to me gluten and, (I hope), saliva free.
When an opportunity came up to transfer to Singapore, I decided that I would be damned if - after robbing me of croissants, bagels an sponge cakes - my genetic inability to digest gluten would also take my chance to see the world. In this exciting,"City of Food", my values, beliefs, and gluten free negotiation strategies have been pulled from my grip, inverted, shaken up and handed back to me as a plate of scrambled customs - only this time with Vegetarian 'gluten meat' mixed through instead of toast on top.
So here I am, learning all over again in a new culture, how to throw a boomerang in a restaurant... and have it come back gluten free. If you are coeliac or gluten intolerant and passing through Singapore, moving in, or already a resident, I hope this blog can help you to enjoy the "City of Food" in safety.
